Details of the Details

Vesper's CurvesThe thick and thin transitions give Vesper its defining character.

Vesper's Metrics Vesper has a relatively large x-height with clear and open forms making it comfortable to read, especially in text sizes. Compact descenders and slightly shorter capitals allow space for diacritics without adding line spacing.

Vesper's Ball Terminals Traditional ball terminals get unique treatments – customized for each letter.

Vesper Corners All of the characters have slightly rounded corners giving them a discrete softness. Text appears somewhat more supple and satiny than it does when using typefaces with sharp corners. The effect is muffled in small sizes but becomes more pronounced when enlarged.

Vespers Angles The overall look and feel of the Latin characters was inspired by the Devanagari (coming very soon!). The slightly angled serifs and cuts in the ‘ball’ terminals came directly from the calligraphic stroke endings found in Devanagari.

The Versatile Family

Vesper's Weights

Vesper Regular Text The five weights all began with the Regular. It is strong, robust, and fairly dark in color. This gives an assertive look to printed text – it isn’t weak or uncertain like many other regulars.

Vesper Light Text However, there are times when you might want something a more delicate. The Light version gives a slightly more discrete voice to the type. It is thinner, more condensed, and has a bit less stroke contrast.

Vesper Light & Medium Pairing The Medium weight works well on it’s own for headlines or short amounts of text. We like to pair Light (for the primary text) and Medium (instead of the usual Bold) to create the perfect amount of emphasis. These two weights, plus italics, are available in the “Vesper Light 4-Pack” for a discounted rate over individual purchases.

Vesper Regular & Bold Pairing Regular & Bold are excellent partners for text + emphasis. The Bold’s high contrast gives it extra ‘sparkle’ but that also makes it more suitable for shorter amounts of text. The “Vesper Regular 4-Pack” has these weights plus italics to make the perfect Vesper starter pack (& you can upgrade to the full family any time).

Vesper Heavy The Heavy and Heavy Italic weights are extra of everything: thicker, louder, more contrast, and more personality. They are perfect for headlines or simply to get the reader’s attention.

There are many OpenType features for complex typographic tasks for everything from fine book or magazine typesetting to academic and scholarly texts.

Contextual Alternates

You are probably used to seeing contextual alternates used for flashy substitutions in script fonts. Vesper’s alternates are the complete opposite. They shouldn’t even be noticed; the reader won’t see them there, but rather gets a subconscious impression of the text being smoother and easy to read. Vesper’s contextual alternates utilize subtly altered versions of letters: serifs that retract or extend, arms or legs that become longer or shorter, along with slightly customized spacing. These fine-tunings lessen dark spots from serifs clashing into each other while also reducing large, empty gaps from letters that are farther apart to smooth out your text. This results in a more even gray on the page with enhanced legibility and a more comfortable reading experience.

Small & Petite Caps

For you, Small Caps are already a standard part of your typographer tool box (& Vesper has them of course). But what about when small caps aren’t quite small enough? For those rare cases, Vesper also offers Petite Caps (capitals that align with the x-height). These miniscule-majuscules are just waiting to be put to creative use.

Vesper's Small & Petite Caps

Case Forms

Most punctuation comes in multiple versions for different typesetting scenarios. When setting all caps, there are raised versions for proper vertical alignment. Even the small caps have specially reduced versions for correct optical proportions.

Quotes

We’ve also thrown in a large collection of contextually-aware double & triple quotes and guillemots to add a bit more refined style to your text. The quotes work for both ‘69’ & ‘96’ settings, and the guillemots can point inside or out. Of course they have case versions as well…

Numbers

There are 9 sets of numerals, plus pre-composed fractions and some smart OT code to help generate additional fractions. Currency symbols come in heights for lining and old-style/small caps in both proportional and tabular spacings.

Past the flannel plains and blacktop graphs and skylines of canted rust, and past the tobacco-brown river overhung with weeping trees and coins of sunlight through them on the water downriver, to the place beyond the windbreak, where untilled fields simmer shrilly in the a.m. heat: shattercane, lamb’s-quarter, cutgrass, sawbrier, nutgrass, jimsonweed, wild mint, dandelion, foxtail, muscadine, spinecabbage, goldenrod, creeping charlie, butter-print, nightshade, ragweed, wild oat, vetch, butcher grass, invaginate volunteer beans, all heads gently nodding in a morning breeze like a mother’s soft hand on your cheek. An arrow of starlings fired from the windbreak’s thatch. The glitter of dew that stays where it is and steams all day. A sunflower, four more, one bowed, and horses in the distance standing rigid and still as toys. All nodding. Electric sounds of insects at their business. Ale-colored sunshine and pale sky and whorls of cirrus so high they cast no shadow. Insects all business all the time. Quartz and chert and schist and chondrite iron scabs in granite. Very old land. Look around you.

The fonts are licensed on a per-title usage, but they may be used on any number of different file formats for the same title (meaning you can produce EPUB & PDF versions of the same title with the same license). Per-title means one specific book or one issue of a magazine, not a series. Additional titles can be purchased later for only a bit extra.
